Directing: is one of the basic functions of management, which comes after planning, organizing, and staffing, and it is said to be a process of guiding and overseeing the performance of an organization’s workers, in addition to encouraging and motivating them to work effectively and efficiently in order to achieve predetermined organization’s goals.

Characteristics of Directing

  1. Supervision: the manager supervises the subordinates’ performance and ensures the plan implementation is on the right track in compliance with predetermined standards. Supervision is often done at lower levels of management where there are tasks to be performed, such as factory supervision
  2. Motivation: is the most important step of directing, it is the process of motivating the worker or employee to be dynamic, aware and loyal in performing their tasks efficiently. Motivating can be achieved through many ways such as wages, incentives, rewards, and promotions…etc.
  3. Leadership: a leader should have an influence on their employees to guide them effectively to implement the required tasks and duties. Effective leadership creates appropriate work environment to achieve the best performance that leads to the best achievement of the organization’s goals
  4. Communication: it is important in all of management functions. Communication process strengthens the links between employees and workers with their management, and through this process manager should know their subordinates’ needs, suggestions, levels of performance and reactions … etc

Importance of Directing

The directing process is the core of management processes and activities of any organization for these following reasons:

  • Direction leads the organization towards the planned goals directly: planning sets goals, and direction ensures the workflow is going towards achieving these goals, starting from the implementation of the first operation to the completion of achieving the set of goals
  • Directing motivates the employees: as we mentioned that motivation is a major task in direction function with a purpose of investing in the efforts of the employees to achieve the best performance
  • Beginning of practical application: direction function transforms the organizational plans into operational activities and processes through activating the material and human resources to achieve the planned organizational goals
  • Directing supports adaptation: it plays an important role in making strategies flexible and adaptable to changes and updates that may take place during and after organizational plans are implemented
  • Directing coordinates employees activities: directing is the stage of instructing and ordering employees to ensure their loyalty to the organization is achieved
